Months before my due date I had decided to try to have a
VBAC (vaginal birth after c-section). Since I had made this decision they like to be very cautious and not risk anything. They had me do a last ultrasound about a 2 weeks before the due date to check on the size of Addison. I was told that Addison would be about 7.8 lbs. So, the
VBAC was still on and we had to wait for it to naturally happen. I had been dilated to 2 for about 2 weeks. Addison's due date was days away and there was no real sign of her coming. I contacted my doctor and we had scheduled a c-section on June 19
th, three days after her due date. I was still hoping she would come naturally, but I was really over being pregnant.
I woke up around 2:30 a.m. on June 19
th with contractions. I wasn't really sure if this was it. I didn't think I would actually go in to labor the day I was going to have a c-section. I showered and the contractions got worse. I was sure this was it. I was in a ton of pain while getting ready and packing my last minute
toiletries. I called my brother Mike, and dropped off Hailey on the way. We arrived at Kaiser in
Fontana around 4:30 a.m. At this point I was in serious pain and was quickly reminded of what a real contraction is! When they checked me I was dilated to 4. When it was time I did get an
epidural. I can say I am a
wimp, and my pain tolerance level is really low. Once it kicked in I was
extremely grateful. Once they broke my water they were aware that Addison had a bowl movement in the womb. I didn't know much about the subject, but I was under the impression that it wasn't a good thing. Dr. Ruiz tried to play it low and assure me things were fine, and it was common for overdue babies. They put me on
pitocin, however only half the amount of a normal labor and delivery. Again they were being very cautious. Since I did go in to labor on the day of my scheduled c-section that meant my Doctor, Dr. Ruiz, was in the hospital and able to deliver Addison.
Hours later it was time to push. I had quite the cheering squad in the room. Of course Daddy, Terri, Mary Ann, and later Staci arrived. I also had the most amazing nurse and Dr. Ruiz. I ended up pushing for about 2 hrs. At 6:05 p.m. Addison Mae Packer was born. As she was delivered she looked purple and didn't cry. At the same moment a group of about 6 other doctors rushed in and took Addison to work/examine her. Because Addison was so big, they didn't realize how large the bowl movement was. She had been blocking a bunch of it. I was a complete mess! I didn't even really get to see her and I was freaking out. As Dr. Ruiz continued to work on me, he kept trying to assure me that everything was alright.
After about 45 min. of the other doctors making sure she hadn't swallowed any, I was able to hold Addison for about 10 minutes. I was extremely emotional as you can see in the pictures below. After our brief time together they took Addison to the
NICU to do some more tests.
It was a difficult time. The waiting room was full of family and friends waiting to see Addison, and now they couldn't. It was heart breaking when Colin brought Hailey in to see me and Addison wasn't there. Hailey had been waiting to meet her little sister. Of course it was difficult to explain to her that Addison was in a special room so the doctors could watch her. It was even more difficult that Hailey was too young to go in the room to see her.
Later that evening I was able to go to the NICU and hold Addison. It was at this time that I was able to breast feed her for the first time. They were keeping Addison over night to run some more tests which included feeding her the bottle to monitor how much she was eating. Of course I was concerned about not breast feeding, but I knew this was the only way.

Waiting patiently...
